Backmuir Trading is a farming operation which started business as a partnership in 1982 and became a ltd company in 2001. The primary areas Backmuir Trading operate in are the production of Cereals, Beef Finishing, and the trading and breeding of Suckler Calves. However we also take pride in our Pure Luing Herd.
The above activities take place on our farms situated around Backmuir, Keith in Morayshire and Mains of Cairnbrogie, Oldmeldrum in Aberdeenshire.
The majority of cereals that we grow are destined for the distillery market as malting barley, with the remainder used as feed for the cattle industry. All arable operations at Backmuir are carried out by our own staff and fleet of modern equipment.
Backmuir’s cattle business includes a large Suckler Herd. In the past Limousin Cross and Belgian Blue Cross Friesian Cows were the chosen Dam but these became impossible to find in the numbers we required. After buying some Luing Heifer Calves and monitoring their performance a decision was taken to replace the Dairy Cross Cows with Beef Bred Sim Luings. These are primarily put to Charolais Bulls to produce calves for the Suckled Calf market or to be finished on our own farms.
