Biomass was installed at Backmuir in 2017 to produce heat mainly to operate the grain dryer along with heating the
Simmers Contracts’ workshops. It also heats the farm workshop and machinery stores. Two floor dryers were placed in dry woodchips for use in the biomass plant and cattle bedding on the farm along with producing dried woodchips to sell to the public. Backmuir can use the woodchips in their own biomass boilers too.
Woodchips can be delivered in bulk or tonne bags dependant on the customer’s requirements. The floor dryers can also be used to as a backup to our existing system and has increased our drying capacity by 50%.
In addition, the biomass plant also supplies all hot water and heating within the Backmuir group, reducing the Backmuir carbon footprint by 2,500 tonnes per annum.
